Big Changes Coming: Director ID Checks Required SOON
From autumn 2025, every company director and person with significant control (PSC) will need to verify their identity. This new requirement, part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, is one of the biggest changes to UK company compliance in years.
It applies to all companies, no matter your size, sector, or how long you’ve been trading.
What’s Changing?
To crack down on fraud and abuse of company structures, Companies House will require directors and PSCs to verify their identity. If you don’t, you won’t be able to file company documents, and you could face penalties or even commit a criminal offence.
When Does It Start?
Now: You can verify voluntarily via GOV.UK
Autumn 2025: It becomes mandatory the exact date to be confirmed!
How Do You Verify?
You'll need to confirm your ID using one of these three options:
GOV.UK One Login
Quick, free, and ideal for most UK-based directors. You’ll get a unique personal ID code to link to your company roles.Post Office (in-person)
For those unable to verify online. You’ll first need to use the GOV.UK service to check eligibility.Authorised Agent (like us)
Accountants and advisers like J-Benn Finance will soon be able to verify your ID for you. Useful for international directors or more complex cases.
What Happens If You Don’t Comply?
Can’t file confirmation statements or key documents
Financial penalties
Banned from setting up new companies
Criminal liability

International directors
Directors with complicated circumstances
Busy business owners who just want it sorted
We will be able to:
Verify your ID and submit it to Companies House
Provide ongoing support and advice
Coordinate checks for multiple directors in your company
(Note: There’ll be a small admin fee for this service)
What You Should Do Now
Check your Companies House info: Your ID needs to match exactly
Get your documents ready: Passport, driving licence, etc.
Make a plan: Especially if you’ve got multiple directors or you're based outside the UK
Verify early: Don’t leave it to the last minute
